What Is AI Therapy

The only AI therapy app built from the brain down.

AI therapy is evidence-based mental health support delivered through artificial intelligence, designed to get smarter about you with every session. The Path was built by a psychologist and neuroscientist who understands how the brain actually changes. Most AI chat tools were not.

The definition

What is AI therapy, and what makes it actually work?

AI therapy is mental health support delivered through artificial intelligence, grounded in evidence-based clinical frameworks and practices, such as CBT, ACT, DBT, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. The Path is available 24/7, no waitlists or insurance forms.

Over 122 million Americans live in areas without enough mental health providers. AI therapy exists to close that gap, not by replacing human therapists, but by being there when they aren't. A separate 2025 Dartmouth study of Therabot — a different research AI tool tested with a clinically high-risk population — reported improvements in participants' mood, anxiety, and well-being. That points to what is possible in the broader category of purpose-built AI; it is not a study of The Path.

The difference is in the design. Persistent memory. Anti-validation architecture that challenges cognitive distortions instead of reinforcing them. A clinical framework built at the model level, not pasted on top. The Path is built around these architectural choices. Most AI products are not.

How it works

How does AI therapy work at The Path?

Four architectural choices separate The Path from every other AI product on the market. Each one was a deliberate decision by a psychologist and neuroscientist who spent his career studying how brains actually change.

Pillar 01 / 04

Persistent memory: it knows you.

The Path builds a detailed model of who you are across every session. Your patterns, your history, your goals, how your thinking shifts over time. Real change requires recognizing patterns across weeks, not just in a single conversation.

Most AI apps reset each session. ChatGPT forgets you when you close the tab. The Path was designed from the ground up to build and revise its understanding because personalized AI can improve low mood precisely when it models the person over time.

The architectural difference

ChatGPT

Validates your perspective. Agrees with your assessment. Optimizes for continued engagement.

The Path

Challenges cognitive distortions. Questions unhelpful beliefs. Optimizes for your growth, not your screen time.

Pillar 02 / 04

Built to challenge you, not agree with you.

The most dangerous thing about using a general AI chatbot for mental health support is that it will validate your distortions. Tell ChatGPT your boss is out to get you, and it will probably agree, reinforcing the thinking that's keeping you stuck instead of helping you examine it.

The Path's AI is designed around the opposite principle: anti-validation. It's been engineered to recognize cognitive distortions, question unhelpful patterns, and challenge the thinking that's keeping you stuck. Real therapy safely challenges your assumptions. So does The Path.

more compute per session than ChatGPT, dedicated to therapeutic depth, not conversation length.

Pillar 03 / 04

A therapist who thinks about you between sessions.

Traditional therapy is often bound to the appointment. The Path was built around a different truth: real change happens between sessions.

Proactive check-ins before important events. A nudge when you've been quiet. Daily challenges designed around your patterns. Thought journals, values quizzes, and gratitude exercises that build over time. Therapy that continues, even when the session ends.

Between-session tools

Thought Journals

Track patterns the way a therapist would, across weeks, not sessions.

Daily Challenges

Work through exercises tailored to your current focus.

Bridge to Safety (988 escalation)

Bridge to Safety is a dedicated escalation protocol, separate from standard therapy mode. The Path's AI does not treat the crisis itself. Its only job is connecting you to trained human help — including pre-filling the first text to 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and working through any barriers until that connection is made.

The Path is not a crisis service, nor is it a replacement for licensed mental health providers or emergency services.

Pillar 04 / 04

Safety-first architecture. Human escalation when it matters.

AI therapy done right knows its limits. The Path is not a crisis service. When conversations reach a level of risk, the AI does not try to treat the crisis itself — Bridge to Safety activates and pushes the conversation toward trained human help, immediately and without hesitation.

Session length limits prevent the AI from optimizing for engagement over your wellbeing. Geofencing complies with state AI therapy regulations. Safety architecture is core to The Path's mission, not patched on afterward. Learn more about how Bridge to Safety works.

Real results

Bold claims need real evidence. Here it is.

Kudos on the 'Session Report' at the end of the therapy sessions. So far mine have been on target with highlights and insights in what was covered and action steps before the next session.

Aydeloof, Discord

It's nice to be able to do a short check in. The feedback and reflection is pretty impressive so far.

Tjf_tib, Discord

AI therapy has been helpful for the on-the-spot moments when you can't see a human therapist. I always will prefer seeing my human counselor — but when you need an on the spot work through it's been helpful.

8kSense, Discord

"As a licensed therapist, I approve of this mental health app."
