AI therapy questions
Honest answers about AI therapy.
Whether you are evaluating AI therapy"AI therapy" describes The Path's AI-powered self-help and coaching tools. The Path is software, not a licensed medical provider. It does not diagnose or treat any medical disorders or mental health conditions, nor is it a replacement for professional clinical care. for the first time, comparing it to General Use AI, or wondering how a session actually works. These are the questions we hear most, with the answers we give over coffee.
Section 1
How AI therapy works
The basics: what the product is, what it is built on, and how it differs from a chatbot.
What is AI therapy and how is it different from talking to General Use AI?
AI therapy is therapeutic support delivered through a purpose-built AI trained on evidence-based clinical frameworks (CBT, ACT, DBT). The Path is not a wrapper around a general-purpose chatbot. It is built on a proprietary engine designed by Dr. Anson Whitmer (Co-founder and CEO), PhD in psychology and neuroscience, specifically for mental well-being and personal development. Unlike General Use AI, it remembers you across sessions, challenges unhelpful patterns rather than validating them, and operates inside an explicit clinical safety protocol.
Is AI therapy evidence-based?
Yes. The Path is built on principles and practices from three of the most validated psychotherapeutic frameworks in the field: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). The alliance, change processes, and other aspects also lean into solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, client-centered therapy, and feedback-informed therapy. The system was designed by Dr. Anson Whitmer (PhD, Psychology and Neuroscience), and our clinical advisory team includes Dr. Dan Leopold (PhD, Clinical Psychology and Neuroscience) and Dr. Matt Englar-Carlson (PhD, Counseling Psychology, APA Fellow).
How does The Path remember me between sessions?
The Path uses persistent memory across every session. It remembers your goals, the patterns you have worked on, the breakthroughs and the setbacks. Unlike a stateless chatbot, every conversation builds on the last, which allows the work to be therapeutic rather than transactional.
Can I choose the personality of my AI therapist?
Yes. The Path offers 11 distinct named AI therapists (Jay, Vivian, Ty, and eight others), each with a unique therapeutic style and tone. Pick the therapist that matches your goals and personality, or switch before or after your next session.
Section 2
Safety, privacy, & crisis
Honest answers. Built on the same crisis protocol described on our Safety & Privacy page.
Is AI therapy safe?
The Path is designed with explicit clinical safety protocols. Our AI follows evidence-based frameworks and operates under a three-tier crisis detection model that escalates to emergency services when imminent risk is detected. The Path does not treat the crisis, and it is not a replacement for emergency care. Instead, the session becomes a bridge to care that is trained to help in these moments. If you are in crisis right now, call or text 988. For the full safety architecture, see our Safety & Privacy page.
What happens if I am in crisis during a session?
The AI is trained to detect crisis signals and immediately enters clarification mode to assess risk level (low / high / imminent). At high and imminent risk, the session pivots into Bridge to Safety, a dedicated escalation protocol, and pre-fills a text to 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) for one-tap access or connects the client with licensed therapy providers. The AI does not try to treat the crisis itself — it works through any obstacles until you connect with trained human help. The Path will not continue a standard therapy session if you are in immediate danger.
Is my data private? Is it used to train AI models?
Your conversations are bank-grade encrypted at rest and in transit. We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers. We have also implemented role-based access controls and least privilege permissions so that no one can access your data without a valid purpose. Full stop. Sessions are protected by an additional personal PIN on top of platform authentication, and you can request deletion of your data at any time.
Will the AI just tell me what I want to hear?
No. The Path is explicitly trained against validation of harmful beliefs. Most AI is engineered to be agreeable. We are engineered for clarity over comfort: the AI will challenge cognitive distortions and surface blind spots rather than reinforce them. This is the founding philosophy, not a marketing tagline.
Is The Path HIPAA compliant?
The Path is designed with HIPAA-aware practices: access controls, audit logging, data minimization, and breach notification procedures. We use bank-grade encryption, undergo periodic penetration tests, and are currently underway in achieving full SOC 2 security certification. For specific compliance questions related to a clinical or enterprise integration, contact our partnerships team.
Section 3
AI therapy vs. human therapy
Where AI therapy fits, where human therapists are essential, and how the two work together.
How does AI therapy compare to human therapy?
AI therapy provides 24/7 availability, persistent memory across every session, and a consistent therapeutic framework. All of this comes at a fraction of the cost of weekly therapy or personal coaching. Human therapists offer clinical judgment, diagnosis, and treatment, which The Path does not provide. The Path is best used as a complement to human care or as an accessible entry point for people who would otherwise have no support, not as a wholesale replacement.
Can AI therapy replace a human therapist?
No. For many everyday mental health needs like stress, anxiety, low mood, habit change, and motivation, The Path is designed to support the work happening between human sessions: the moments where patterns actually show up, decisions get made, and emotional states shift in real time. The Path does not diagnose, treat, or substitute for professional clinical care for any conditions or disorders. Anyone seeking a diagnosis, treatment, or medication management should work directly with a licensed clinician or health care provider. If you are in crisis or at risk of harming yourself, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or call 911 if you are in immediate danger.
Is AI therapy effective for anxiety, depression, or stress?
The Path uses techniques from CBT, DBT, and ACT that have been validated for decades for anxiety, low mood, stress, and behavior change. The Path also runs an active clinical research program to measure outcomes specifically inside the AI-delivered format. We optimize for problem resolution, not engagement, and surface real progress signals via pre/post session check-ins.
Section 4
Cost, access, & getting started
How to use The Path, what it costs, and where it works.
How much does The Path cost?
The Path is significantly less expensive than traditional therapy or personal coaching. Visit our pricing page for current plans and any available discounts. There are no insurance gates and no scheduling. Pricing is straightforward and per-month.
What devices does it work on?
The Path is available on iOS and Android devices, so you have therapeutic support wherever you are. Sessions sync across devices.
Do I need a prescription or referral to use The Path?
No. You can sign up directly. No insurance referral, no waitlist, no diagnostic gate. The Path is designed for accessibility, especially for people who would otherwise have no path to mental health support at all.
How long does a typical session last?
Most sessions run 15 to 30 minutes, depending on what you are working on. A quick check-in or moment-of-need conversation can wrap in 10 to 15 minutes, while a deeper session working through a specific pattern or decision usually lands closer to 30 minutes. Sessions are intentionally time-boxed. The product is explicitly designed not to optimize for engagement; session length caps exist so the AI moves you forward rather than keeping you on the app.
